Being of mid-European Jewish origin confers a risk for contracting classic KS, but this is a relatively rare disease. There are no known risk factors for the African variant except possibly geographic origin. The type that occurs after immunosuppressive drug treatment has only the drug as a source of risk.
At Significantly Higher Risk
• People who share or use HIV-contaminated needles. According to multiple studies presented at the 1993
International AIDS meeting, spread can be eliminated in drug users by never sharing needles.
• People—both straight and gay—who have unprotected sexual contact with a person who is infected with HIV.
The risk increases with the number of unprotected sexual encounters.
• Convincing data shows that safe sexual practices can dramatically decrease the incidence of AIDS and,
